Ella Ampongan is a Naarm-based multimedia artist working across printmaking, textiles, and installation. Born in the Philippines and migrating to Australia in 2008, they bring a diasporic perspective to material investigations of cultural memory and identity. Their practice transforms traditional crafts like embroidery and knitting into conceptual displacement, using materials as carriers of personal and collective history. A recipient of the Outstanding Printmaking Student award in both 2023 and 2024, Ella graduated with a Certificate IV and Diploma in Visual Arts (Painting and Printmaking) from Melbourne Polytechnic. Their work has been featured in group exhibitions including Brunswick Street Gallery’s Small Artworks Prize (2025), Red Gallery’s You Look Good on Paper (2024), and the VAS 9x5 Exhibition (2023). Before transitioning to fine arts, Ella built a career in communication and marketing - a background that informs their nuanced approach to visual storytelling. Currently pursuing a Master of Contemporary Art at the University of Melbourne, they are expanding their practice into large-scale installations while maintaining a rigorous engagement with printmaking. This work builds upon their established visual language while exploring new methods for making diasporic experiences physically tangible. Flow is the steady movement of liquid, gas or electricity or a smooth, continuous movement of something or someone from one place to another. In psychology, a flow state marks full immersion or intense energised focus or enjoyment of an activity or process. Featuring works in diverse mediums including photography, sculpture, textiles, found objects, paintings, installation, video and performance, FLOW imagines a range of dynamic movements, relationships and interactions - of dreams, images, bodies, materials, forms, conversations and processes. Flow is curated by two teachers in the program, Dr Kate Just and Eugenia Lim. Tues, 29 July - Fri, 1 August VCA Art Space Building 874 | Ground Level | Room 134 | 38 Dodds Street, Southbank
